SAG Guidelines

The lonely SAG, often a forgotten important individual on the team. For those who have volunteered to be SAG, a big Thanks! You make the ride a whole lot more pleasurable!

SAG Guidelines (To be read by riders and SAGS)

  • This event is over at 8:30. Everyone should aim to be off their bikes by 8:30.
  • Teams should make every effort to make their SAG's job as easy as possible. It's tougher than you think to drive a car, 200+ miles, slowly.
  • Obey all traffic laws and take proper precautions on the road.
  • Use flashers if following your riders.
  • Drive with your group before dawn and help light the road for them.
  • Where possible, arrive at food/rest stops before riders. Order their meals and have them ready for when the tram arrives. Refill water bottles and have snacks available. Manage the length (time) of the rest stops.

Suggested SAG supplies

  • Suggestions are the responsibility of the Riders!
  • Bring two ice chests-one for ice and water - one for food
  • Each rider should have 2-4 gallons of water or energy drink (Less for Century and Double Metric riders). Have some in the car at the start, more can be picked up along the way.
  • If it's a hot day - possibly keep bandannas soaking for each rider – to be worn under helmets or to wipe down with.
  • Floor pump with an adapter that works on all riders' tires
  • Tool kit, Patch kit and spare tubes, spare wheels
  • First aid kit
  • Exchange cell phone and Emergency Phone Numbers for all your team.
  • Camera – for posterity sake! Consider taking pictures of interest sights along the way. Even if your riders may not be in the shot.
  • For SAGs own comfort - bring your sunglasses, comfortable clothing and anything you need to survive – it will be a long day!

TODO in advance

  • Like the bikes, having the SAG vehicle in for a checkup is not a bad idea. Especially the transmission and coolant systems. They take a lot of abuse following the riders for miles on end.
  • Make sure you have a map of the route through the various counties: Sussex, Morris, Somerset, Middlesex, Mercer, Burlington, Atlantic, and Cape May.
  • Get a list of your riders and emergency contacts, cell numbers if possible.
  • Put a sign on the sag vehicle like: "Caution – Bicyclists" and/or "Cape May or Bust!"

TODO on friday night

  • Familiarize yourself with the cue sheet.
  • Plan with your riders, places to get food/rest stops-the cue sheet will be marked with: F for food, R for restrooms and G for gas.
  • Plan the group’s sagging style.. Ride with, ride ahead, ride 5 miles ahead and meet, ride ahead to next turn, etc.
  • The group should agree on this before the ride, as well as a Start time.
  • Check with team for provisions for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • Collect coolers, extra water bottles (labeled), beverages, food, gear, tubes, wheels, extra clothing form riders, etc.
  • Collect money in advance from the team to pay for expenses for the day – including gas, meals, and extra supplies.
  • Make sure cell phones are charged and turned on, ready for the journey
